Notes: | Folder contains photograph of Balfe and newspaper clipping from 1858. Michael William Balfe (180870) was an Irish composer and musician, best-remembered for his opera The Bohemian Girl. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he composed 38 operas, almost 250 songs and other works. He was also a noted conductor, directing Italian Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre for seven years, among other conducting posts. R. M. Levey, whose true name was Richard Michael O'Shaughnessy, was a renowned Irish musician. He was a good friend of Balfe's and in 1839 toured Ireland with his opera company.
