Bibliographic Details
Main Creator: Brewster, Gordon, artist.
Summary:Inscribed in pencil l.c.: Regarding the retention of the pictures of the Lane Bequest, Dr W.B. Yeats stated that "England has no defense whatever in the matter except the pure technicality of the law, England has no claim to these pictures and his statesmen know it". (This illustration refers to the Hugh Lane paintings [following Lane's death on board the Lusitania, which was torpedoed off the coast of Cork on 7 May 1915, an unwitnessed codicil to his will was found in the drawer of his desk at the National Gallery of Ireland; the codicil left the paintings in the National Gallery, London to the city of Dublin, on the condition that a building was provided for them within five years of Lane's death; however under British law the codicil was deemed invalid. Controversy over the ownership of the Lane collection continued until 1959, when an agreement was made between the National Gallery, London and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, which sees the paintings alternate between the two. It was subsequently revised in 1979 and 1993).
