As a result of the Plan of Campaign the shop keepers of Tipperary withheld their rents from the local landlord. A. H. Barry, and decided to build a new town for themselves called New Tipperary. They commissioned a Dublin builder to construct a street of houses and a street of shops and a market area. When funds ran out the shopkeepers were forced to move back to their original premises in Tipperary and the land lord leveled the new town.
