Summary:Imaginary scene depicting the meeting of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, (1567-1601), and Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone, (1540?-1616). Essex was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and was sent in 1599 to quell the rebellion of the Earl of Tyrone. Failing to accomplish his mission, he made an unauthorised truce with the Earl of Tyrone. This print shows the Earl of Essex on horseback in a river while the Earl ofTyrone sits on horseback on the bank of the river. In the background is a military camp. On his return to England Essex was tried for treason and executed in 1601. Smaller image l.c. on sheet shows the Earl of Essex bowing before Queen Elizabeth I of England, (1533-1603).
