The Minister in Surprize
[graphic].
Summary: | A government minister recoiling from the sight of the devil holding a tablet "The American Resolves are a Devil of a Dose". At the minister's feet are books with the titles "The American Constitution" and "List of Pensioners". In front of the minister on a table is a sheet of paper stating "New Members" and "Civil List in Arrears". This cartoon is probably a reference to the opposition to the Stamp Act which led to it's repeal in 1766. This cartoon also is probably a reference to the American Constitution which was declared in effect in 1789. |
