| Notes: | This picture was engraved as Plate 42 of Volume I of Francis Grose's "Antiquities of Ireland",", London 1791 (actually published in 1794), whch provides the identification of the location, but not of the artist. A number of the other Kilkenny monuments illustrated in the same book are by J.G. Brien or Oben (but more correctly O'Brien), floruit 1779-1819, so it might be a possibility that this watercolour may be by him too. This drawing could be from the collection of drawings of antiquities in the portfolio of the Right Honourable William (Burton) Conyngham, but there is no proof of this. If this drawing were part of Conyngham's colllection, it could be dated to around 1779-1780, at a time when we know that Conyngham collected drawings of antiquities and when O'Brien was exhibiting views of ruins in County Kilkenny in the Society of Artists in Ireland during the 1780's Physical description: 1 drawing : watercolour ; 16.3 x 22.8 cm. more |
