Notes:Andrew Robinson Stoney was an Irish serial adventurer, kidnapper, and possibly murderer, on whom Thackeray based the character of Barry Lyndon. He was suspected of playing a role in the death of his first wife, Hannah Newton, whom he had physically and financially abused. Shortly after her death he secured a marriage to the wealthy and newly widowed Countess of Strathmore after faking a scandal in the press and fighting a sham duel in her honour. After years of physical abuse the Countess escaped and launched a suit against him in 1785. In late 1786 he had her abducted and imprisoned for which he was subsequently jailed for 3 years. He later died in debtor's prison in 1810.
