Notes:The Kilkea branch of the Greene family descends from William Nassau Greene (1714-1781), a younger son of Godfrey Greene of Greenville (grandson of Captain Godfrey Greene) and his wife Abigail Philips. William became a merchant in Carlow, but after a few years moved to Kilkea, Co. Kildare (five miles from Carlow), where he farmed land rented from the Duke of Leinster. His residence was at Kilkea Lodge. William's younger son John Greene I (1751-1819) married Mary Cooper in 1779 and built Millbrook, a substantial farm and mill on the river Griese. From his son John Greene II (1782-1851) and Henry Greene (1802-1854) descend the Greenes of Millbrook and Kilkea Lodge respectively. On the death of Thomas Westland Greene (1870-1950), Millbrook passed to his cousin Charles Westland Greene (1912-1983) of Kilkea Lodge, thus uniting the two properties. In the 20th century John Nassau Greene of Kilkea Lodge was a member of the first senate elected under de Valera's constitution (1938); his younger son Juan Nassau Greene of Levittstown House, Co. Kildare, was the first President of the Irish Farmers' Association (1955-1962).
