Summary: | This publication is based on an exhibition co-curated by the Hugh Lane Gallery and the National Museum of Ireland to mark the centenary of the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. This book features for the first time paintings by Sir John Lavery next to contemporary artefacts of the time from the National Museum of Ireland?s collection, such as the fountain pen reputedly used by Michael Collins to sign the original Treaty document. This unique collaboration enables the institutions? respective collections to be brought together to tell the story of the Treaty negotiations. Negotiations for and signing of the Treaty were crystallising moments for Ireland in the 20th century; from signing to heated Dáil debate to narrow ratification and their aftermath, the Treaty was a vehicle of peace as well as a catalyst of civil war. |
