Summary: | Programme [cover in orange paper with a red cross printed at top and decorative border of stylised flowers printed in blue coloured ink] for the First Grand Variety Concert in aid of Cumann Croise Deirge na hÉireann [the Irish Red Cross Society] in the Queen's Theatre, Dublin on Sunday, 7 December, 1941, produced (and compered on the night] by Mr. P.R. Gogan. Inscribed in manuscript hand in blue ink on cover 'J. McGuire', with an article printed inside cover entitled 'How the Red Cross Society was founded' which includes a brief overview of the life and career of its' founder Henri Dunant and stressing the importance of the organisations' neutrality. Amongst the numerous entertainers and performers were Noel Purcell, (1900-1985). Various sketches were also performed - a 'Dispensary Sketch', 'comedy courtesy of the Queen's Theatre' and 'The Red Cross Tableau', 'With members of the S.E. Brigade, assisted by Headquarters' Division C.B.S.I., featuring the 'Red Cross March', by Cinnire Peadar Broughal, No. 25 Division. Featuring several advertisements for Dublin based businesses amongst them Kildare House, 'Tailoring of Distinction', 13 Westmoreland St., Dublin; Connie Ryan School of Dancing, 54 Middle Abbey St.; Fletcher Sons & Co, Fruit Salesmen; MacDermott, 59 Ranelagh Road 'High Class Tobacconists and Confectionery / Select Library'; P.A. Brady, M.P.S.I., Prescription Chemist, 12 Upper Camden St. and H. Lawlor & Son, Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Salesmen, 42 East Arran Street, Dublin'. |
