Catherine Byrne [then Lord Mayor of Dublin]; a reproduction of the portrait of Ronnie Delaney by the Irish artist James Hanley (in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland); a short biographical article on Ronnie Delaney; an image of Bob Geldof, performing on stage; a short biographical article on Bob Geldof; the programme of events on 5 March 2006 [the Irish folk group Kíla performed at 3.15; at 4 p.m. the City Manager John Fitzgerald read the resolution of Dublin City Council; the Lord Mayor presented Ronnie Delaney with a scroll and a gift from Waterford Crystal; he responded and signed the Roll of Honour; the Lord Mayor then presented Bob Geldof with a scroll and a gift from Waterford Crystal; he then responded and signed the Roll of Honour]; a short paragraph from Waterford Crystal; a list of the recipients of the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin. A note printed at the bottom of the list states: "Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest in Burma when she received the Honorary Freedom of Dublin. A space has been left blank on the roll awaiting her signature". On Wednesday December 13, 2017, Dublin city councillors voted to rescind their 2000 decision to bestow the Freedom of the City on Aung San Suu Kyi in 1999 [fifty-nine votes in favour, two against and one abstention] and instructed the then council chief executive Owen Keegan to remove her name from the “Roll of Honorary Freedom” because of the treatment and repression of Rohingya Muslims in her country. Dublin City Council also agreed to a request from Bob Geldof to remove his name from the roll and he returned the scroll to them that he received from the council at this ceremony held on 5 March 2006. |
