Summary:Card with blank space at top to be used to note those from whom money was collected (and their addresses) with quarter share tickets printed underneath; they were then placed in a draw for the [then] forthcoming derby in Epson. Printed on verso of card: "This Counterfoil to be returned to the Sweep Treasurer, Room 245, Custom House, Dublin, on or before Thursday, 2nd June, 1949". Attached is a sheet explaining ho the Civil Service Benevolent Fund operates and that the money raised in this instance will be in aid of the Sanatorium Fund. Printed at bottom of sheet: "The Draw, which you are invited to attend, will be held at the Adelaide Hall on 2nd June, at 8 p.m. Drawers of horses will be notified. results and numbers of tickets included in the draw will be circulated as soon as practicable. W.S. Bateman, Chairman Organising Committee. Room 245, Custom House, April, 1949". [Under the auspices of a private for-profit lottery company, the first sweepstake draws were held in the Mansion House, Dawson St., Dublin on 19 May 1939 (under the supervision of the Chief Commissioner of Police); they moved to the R.D.S. (Royal Dublin Society), Ballsbridge in 1940 and the company became formally known as The Hospitals' Trust (1940) Limited].
