Summary: | [This is a companion print to PD 2121 TX 2 (37)]. The scene is the interior of a drawing room in France - a smiling, uniformed solder offers bons bons on one plate and some fruit [peaches?] on a small plate to a lady, who is seated very close to a lit fire and who holds a closed fan in her left hand. Standing in front of the chimneypiece is another young woman who holds a music score with the title 'Chanson L'Amour Timidi' ['Timid Love Song'] while adjacent to her a man plays the violin, while standing on a piece of paper that reads “Downfall /of / Paris”. The room has florid wallpaper featuring Cupids with arrows seated on clouds and cherubs/putti dancing with garlands of flowers and laurel wreaths; in the left foreground is a console table with decanters of claret, a vase of flowers, grapes and peaches; against at wall is a chaise longue while in gilt frames hanging over the chimney piece are three images - in the centre with the inscription underneath that reads ‘Napoleon Le Grand’ is Napoleon as Emperor (wearing ermine robes, crowned with a laurel wreath and holding a sceptre); at left is a depiction of the island of Elba, (inscribed ‘Elba’) and at right an image entitled ‘St. Helena’, where Napoleon was taken in 1815 and where he died in exile on 5 May 1821 [this image is very similar to a well-known engraving by Thornton from ca. 1790 entitled 'A View of the Town and Island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the British East India Company']. Several books are lying on top of the mantle of the chimney piece but there is a spine title on only one - “Code Napoleon”. [The 'Code civil des Français' ('The Civil Code of the French People') is the French civil code established under Napoleon I - it was drafted by a commission of four jurists and was enacted on 21 March 1804 across all the regions France then controlled - France, Belgium, Luxembourg, parts of what are now Germany and Italy; it became known as the 'Code Napoléon' in 1807]. |
