Decorative border around sheet. Text continues: "To-morrow (Thursday), September 7th, Grand Military Box Night. The amusements being under the immediate patronage and presence of Major Lord Edward P. Clinton, and officers 1st Battalion (Prince Consort's Own) Rifle Brigade. The next grand illuminated morning performance, will take place on Saturday, September 9th. Doors open at 2. Commence at 2-30. Smoking strictly prohibited in all parts of the cirque. Prices of Admission - Stalls, 3s. Amphitheatre 2s. Pit and Promenade, 1s. Gallery, 6d. Half-price for children under ten to all parts except Gallery. Box Office open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children in arms not admitted to stall seats. Programmes issued gratuitously in stalls and amphitheatre. Secretary, Mr. C.H. Gill. Business Agent, Mr. Alfred Powell. Acting Manager, Mr. William Powell. Musical Director, Mr. G. Clemments. Director and Proprietor, Mr. Charles Hengler". Lord Edward William Pelham-Clinton, (1836-1907), joined the Rifle Brigade as an ensign in 1854 and served in the Crimea after the fall of Sebastopol [1856]; he was elected unopposed at the 1865 general election as M.P. for North Nottinghamshire [British Liberal Party], but did not seek re-election in 1868. Frederick Charles Hengler, (1820-1887), [always known as Charles], opened Hengler's Cirque in Liverpool in 1857. He opened similar permanent circus buildings in Glasgow and Dublin in 1863; in Hull in 1864, in Birmingham and Bristol in 1866 and in London in 1871. |
