This is allegedly a bust of Denis Florence MacCarthy. Now I suspect that many of us plebs never heard of this gentleman, so one wonders who was he to be preserved for all time in marble? It is a fine-looking sculpture with excellent detail, so this is a particularly singular honour for Denis. Google search on the way!!!!
+++ UPDATE +++
No idea why our catalogue record had a question mark after Bust of Denis Florence MacCarthy? as it quite clearly states what it is on the tin, or in this case, marble plinth. Thanks to Suck Diesel for the list of the great and good of Irish society in 1882, who came together to contribute to a memorial fund to perpetuate “in a fitting manner the memory of this distinguished Irish poet”. We’re assuming this bust was the outcome of that fund? And we now know that Mr MacCarthy (1817-1882) was an Irish poet, translator, and biographer, born in Sackville Street Lower (now O’Connell Street), Dublin.
Photographers: Various
Date: After 1882 (date of death is on the plinth)

"Ah! my heart is weary waiting, Waiting for the May: Waiting for the pleasant rambles Where the fragrant hawthorn brambles, Where the woodbine alternating, Scent the dewy way; Ah! my heart is weary, waiting, Waiting for the May." Denis Florence MacCarthy (That's worth a bust I think)

It should be reversed, as the lettering is currently back-to-front

I admin a group called "upsidey downsie" (where something in life are best seen upsidey downsie). I sometime think that NLI secretly hosts a "back to frontie let's reversie". Ireland! its secret history in reverse. hope everyone is in good health and really pleased that NLI can still admin it's Flickr account in difficult times ...

The inclusion of Cardinal Newman in the committee reflects the fact that McCarthy served as first Professor of Poetry in Newman's Catholic University in Dublin in the mid-1850s. It was Fr David Moriarty of All Hallows, later Bishop of Kerry - who brought McCarthy to Newman's attention. McCarthy's contemporary Robert Ornsby, Professor of Classical Literature, described McCarthy as 'mainly a literary man, and his literary tastes are rather of the magazine description;' but he had 'a remarkably painstaking and industrious mind, and … a good deal of real genius.'
