Summary:Blank membership card [n.d., ca. 1880-1889] for the Irish National Land League in Australia. Lithographic illustration on recto by lithographer P.W. Niven. Illustration includes a round tower, the Parliament House on College Green [now the Bank of Ireland] with a banner/scroll across it with the words "1782 - As it was so it shall be" [referring to 'Grattan's Parliament']; a harp, an Irish greyhound, a high cross and shamrock leaves. At top is a coat of arms featuring a kangaroo [on the left of an emblazoned shield] and an emu [on the right of the shield] that has the image of a sun rising above it; the words "Advance Australia" appear on a scroll underneath the shield. On verso [all printed in green font] are the names of the senior members of the Irish National Land League [such as Charles Stewart Parnell, Miss [Fanny] Parnell, Michael Davitt] along with M.P.'s of the Irish Parliamentary Party involved in the organisation such as John Dillon, Joseph Biggar, T. P. O'Connor etc. At top are the words: "The land for the people / liberty makes brothers of us all! Union is strength!". It then proceeds to list objects of the Irish National Land League. Note this was purchased by the NLI as part of a lot that included a photocard of Charles Stewart ParnelI, [based on photograph by the Dublin photographer William Lawrence]; this photocard is also held in the NLI Ephemera Department at NLI Call Number EPH A746 Both this Irish National Land League [Australian branch] membership card and the photocard were originally framed together [and both may possibly have been owned by the same person?].

The Irish National Land League was established in Dublin [21 October 1879] by Michael Davitt; Charles Stewart Parnell was the first President. Branches abroad, such as this one in Australia, were founded by emigrants not long after.
