Notes: | Engraved illustration on title page by the Irish engraver Philip Simms. Original edition printed in London in May of 1727. This is perhaps John Gay's most reprinted work and the collection of fifty fables in verse was an instant success. The Duke of Cumberland for whom the poems had been written, became a field commander in defeating the Jacobites in 1745-6 and is still remembered in Scotland for his ill-treatment of his adversaries.
