Summary: | In the East Clare by-election of 1917, De Valera stood for Sinn Féin and Lynch stood for the Irish Parliamentary party. De Valera won the seat. On the left hand side underneath a signpost is Éamon De Valera pointing towards an arch which reads "European Peace Congress" - beyond which [further down the road] is the sun with the words "Irish freedom and prosperity". A sign pointing left reads: "Sinn Féin Road. This Road Leads to 1. An Independent Ireland / 1. Freedom from England's War Taxation / 3. Industries, Education / 4. National Prosperity". On the right hand side, underneath another signpost is Patrick Lynch, wearing his barrister's wig and gown and holding a scroll of paper in his hand. He is pointing down a road towards buildings which have the words "Poor Law Union", "Jail" and "Emigration Offices" written on them. Over this is a dark sky with the word "Famine". A sign pointing right reads: "Westminster Road. 1. Land Taxes on Farmers / 2. Conscription / 3. Partition of Ireland / 4. Dublin Castle Jobbery / 5. Famine and / Decay". Under this image of Lynch are the words "What Lynch ex-crown prosecutor of Kerry stands for." With the initials of the illustrator "J.M.B.". |
