The attached copy contains the following information: " Actually solely by the desire to bring an honourable understanding between the two bodies of irishmen now opposed to each other in civil strife... We recognise that on each side are men animated by the belief that they are acting in the best interests of Ireland... Our opinion is that the terms of settlement are essentially a matter for negotiation, and eventually this negotiation must come ".

Containing the following information: " I am a solitary observer who have not recently been in close personal touch with Irish conditions. You are a great body of men who have taken an active part in shaping events. If, as I hope and pray, your initiative brings about the desired pacification, there is no more to be said except in the way of thanks giving. But if - which God forbid - there be a difficulty in reconciling the views of the leading representatives of the opposing parties there would remain, surely, the appeal to the people".
