They fought in the Wilderness campaign, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. It is claimed that the 57th suffered the highest percentage of killed and mortally wounded of any Union regiment in the war - roster lists eighteen per cent being born in Ireland, no data given on the percentile of Irish born in America.
