Summary:Contains correspondence between Heaney and Ben Barnes, Artistic Director, Abbey Theatre, concerning the commissioning and writing of 'The Burial of Thebes'. Included is a fragment of the playscript, containing a re-working of the Chorus speeches, as forwarded to Barnes by Heaney, and Barnes' correspondence with Vassilis Karasmanis, Director of the European Cultural Centre, Delphi, concerning the Abbey production. Correspondence covers the period 5 December 2002-1 March 2004.

Notes:Heaney's adaption of Sophocles' play 'Antigone', titled 'The Burial at Thebes', was commissioned by the Abbey Theatre as part of its centenary celebrations and first performed there on 31 March 2004. It was first published by Faber and Faber in 2004.

MS 49,493/242 (pp 11-12) have been copied and the copies inserted into the file, as the original manuscripts contained private information.
