Summary:This fine swing bridge was designed by Mr. G.W. Hemans and built under the supervision of William Dargan. The contractors for the project were Fox & Henderson and the massive iron work was shipped to Limerick from whence it was transferred to Athlone by barge. The bridge took less than 18 months to complete. Up to the mid 1930's the central span was opened twice a year to accommodate yachts taking part in regattas on Lough Ree.
