more
Thought we might visit another bathing place today - this time it's the Bathing Slip at Tramore in Co. Waterford. A tad more rampant semi-nudiness on display than at Portrush yesterday...
And what a remarkable range of early 20th century male swimwear? Some seem almost improvised (not that I've examined their nether regions in great detail, you understand).
I repeat: Hubba, Hubba!
Date: Circa 1910?? (definitely after 1890, thanks Niall McAuley)

@beachcomberaustralia This is Ireland - the water's always cold! I'm sensing something. I'm getting a strong feeling. What could it be? Oh, that's it - I feel that a Limerickbybeachcomber will be winging its way across the interweb about this one! :D (fingers crossed it'll be suitable for a family website)

In Tramore by the seaside one day Some lads with their knobs on display Found the salt water's chill Wasn't quite such a thrill When their members all shrivelled away

@8468254@N02 Ahem, cough, splutter! Yes, probably that kind of thing... Though was hoping for a little more "before the watershed" obscurantism.

Is at least one naked?

There is no watershed in the sea. The water level's above the ground level.

@79549245@N06 That's why I wanted to add a note. I also think at least one is naked.

@79549245@N06 Bathing Huts 3 and 9 in exactly the same position in that colourised postcard from the excellent Waterford Co. Museum.

It's probably just as well the photographer forgot to focus on the foreground!

@nlireland It's like enough that I'd guess it was taken at the same time. The clouds look hand painted, so they don't prove anything.

@8468254@N02 I think so too! Chap standing in colour version in brown suit with white scarf looks like chap standing at right of group in our one...

That and the camera is in the exact same spot, the tide is at the same level, the rotting wooden remains are in an equal state of dilapitude, etc. Does the museum have a date for it?

If you harken back to the dreadful comments about the four oarsmen then these disgraceful flashers are getting off very lightly indeed:-) They look like bad lycra swim/cycle shorts.

@swordscookie I think these lads would be as sick as a plane to Lourdes to be compared to the "meat and two veg" on display in the photo you reference....

Another great photo Carol thanks for posting it. This was known as the mens slip, the ladies slip or bathing place was further up the beach near the cliffs. A slightly older view Tramore

@33577523@N08 Glad you like it, Paul. We're seeing evidence that men's and women's bathing places were segregated all over Ireland. Betting that this was the case in England, Wales and Scotland too. I'm wondering if the same held true for "continental" Europe? Also wondering what happened to interlopers from the other gender? Relatively recently that the all male bastion of the Forty Foot in Dublin was invaded...

Tramore had another male only bathing place, The Guillamene Cove, not sure when it was opened to all genders. Sign at the Guillamene Guillamene Cove, Tramore May 2006

@nlireland That's interesting. My granny always used to go swimming at Ladies' Cove in Dunmore East instead of at Lawless Strand with the proletariat (i.e. me).
