The Shackletons were Irish Quakers, descended, as was Emma Clarke Abraham, from Judge Thomas Fell, whose widow Margaret married George Fox, gaining for the family home of Swarthmoor the title of 'the birthplace of Quakerism'. Mary Walpole, Ashbrook, Co. Offaly, married Richard Shackleton, a miller from Canonbrook, Lucan, Co. Dublin, on 11 May 1890 in Churchtown.
