Summary:Title inscribed in ink on 3rd page in sketchbook; inscribed in pencil underneath title: Lisbon, March 1790. Sketchbook bound in full red Morocco leather, richly gilt. James Cavanagh Murphy, (1760-1814), was commissioned by William Burton Conyngham, (1733-1796), to go to Portugal and make drawings of the Church of Batalha. This album may have been compiled as a presentation copy for his patron. Watercolours of buildings of architectural interest, groundplans and ornamentation. Full-page holograph description of the town of Evora present, a manuscript title-page and a small drawing and description of a tombstone. Several pages cut out or blank. With handwritten note in black ink on [pasted down] endpaper by George Noble, Count Plunkett, dated 6th November 1914: "James [Cavanah] Murphy's drawings (obtained from Sir Thomas Manly Deane, whose people were friends of Murphy). / 6th November 1914 / G.N. Count Plunkett".
