Image within a circular ink frame diam. 10.3 cm. Watermark u.l. on sheet is part of a shield with fleur-de-lys

An entry in Austin Cooper's diary for June 30th, 1784 (NLI Ms. Acc. 4841) reads: "Left Kilkenny with party of 50th Foot - breakfasted at Royal Oak and arrived at Carlow about 3 o clock, where we remained". This shows that not only he had to move around with military protection while collecting money for the Treasury around the country, but that he used the opportunity of resting in various towns to make sketches of antiquities
