Drawn by Austin Cooper perhaps when he was touring the country gathering money from area tax collectors, or a Paymaster to the Civil and Military Establishments. In his diary for May 26th, 1781 (NLI Ms. Acc. Munster 4841, page 14 and quoted in Liam Price's book, page 17-18), Cooper wrote: The Abbey of Mungret withi 3 ma of Limk [Limerick] once a famous place, has now no more than the regular walls of a church, wch. carries very little marks of Antiquity thereon in any particular. The E. end is 47 ft. by 16 ft. with a plain narrow window, in ti a large tomb like a Chest withot. [without] date or inscription. The centre or nave is 33 ft. by 28 1/2 ft., the comunication from wch to the E end, is by a small arch. On the N. side hereof is a small porch or entrance. The W. end is 12 ft. by 22 ft. on the N. side whereof is a small Tower, with ruin battlements. (see View). There are no Old Tombs here'. Cooper also gives a small plan of the church.
