561 |a William Burton (1733-1796) who adopted the name Conyngham in 1781, was the first president of the Hibernian Antiquarian Society, the first practical Archaelogical Society in the country. It attempted to publish one or more volumes of engravings of Irish antiquities. Conyngham gathered existing drawings and also commissioned artists such as Gabriel Beranger, Angelo Maria Biagari and J.J. Barralet to make drawings which would be used to form a basis for engravings. Conyngham's collection, acquired by Austin Cooper in 1810, and Cooper's (and others) copies of these originals together with two volumes of his own drawings made when travelling around the country, form most of the Cooper Collection
