Notes:'Hungry Hill' is an historical novel based on the true story of the Puxley family of Ireland. The inspiration for it lay in the passion Daphne had for Henry (aka Christopher) Puxley, a prolonged yet more-or-less unfulfilled love affair which dominated her emotional life during the war years (and coloured it for the rest of her life). The 43 pages of manuscript and typescripts notes illustrate the thoroughness of Du Maurier's research: beginning with transcripts of correspondence they proceed through summaries, digests and lists of questions to the final bare bones of the book, laid out on five small pages. The presentation copies, and a very fine photograph of Du Maurier in a large country house (Menabilly?) are powerful reminders of the affair: the first is Hungry Hill itself, a first edition in a presentation binding with the Puxley family arms, commissioned by Du Maurier from Bumpus of Oxford St., and inscribed by her to Henry; and the second is an inscribed copy of a 1946 reprint of The Loving Spirit, the book from which they took their "noms d'amour", he Christopher and she Jane. For a full account of the relationship and this book, see Margaret Forster's Daphne Du Maurier. The 1968 letter (a 4 pp ALS) cited by Forster is present, as also are two typescripts, one signed, of essays by Du Maurier.
