Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa was a Fenian leader and member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was born Jeremiah Donovan in Rosscarbery in County Cork in 1831 to Denis Donovan and Ellen Driscol. He adopted the surname Ross from his agnomen "Rossa" coming from the townland of Rossmore in Kilmeen. O'Donovan Rossa founded the Phoenix National and Literary Society and dedicated his life to working towards the establishment of an independent Irish Republic. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and after fleeing to the United States as part of the Cuba Five, he joined Irish revolutionary organisations there. O'Donovan Rossa was married three times and had eighteen children. He died at the age of 83 in Staten Island on 29 June 1915. His body was returned to Ireland for burial. The funeral at Glasnevin Cemetery on 1 August 1915 was a huge affair. The graveside oration was given by Patrick Pearse.
