Notes:Michael MacDonagh was born in Limerick on 26 August 1860. He was the special correspondent for the 'Freeman's Journal' for 8 years and appointed sketch writer in the House of Commons in 1887. He joined 'The Times' in 1894 and wrote campaign articles for the paper during general elections. He also contributed articles to magazines on Irish history, Irish literature, parliamentary procedures and traditions. He authored biographies of James Warren Doyle, Daniel O'Connell, and William O'Brien, and was a supporter of Home Rule. He was a strong opponent of the partition of Ireland in 1921. MacDonagh was one of the first members of the Institute of Journalists and a founder of the Irish Literary Society, for which he served as vice-president. He was elected chairman of the Press Gallery in 1924 and also wrote entries for the Dictionary of National Biography. He died on 27 February 1946.
