'Smashing the Piano' (1999): Drafts and notes on poems with a political theme,
1970-1999.
This file contains typescript and handwritten notes and poems which were concerned with politics (1970-1981). It demonstrates the publishing history of poems, such as “Sands”, “Internment” and “Shadow” alongside poems like “Cassandra’s Answer” that appeared in a previous collection ‘Mount Eagle’ (1989). A published piece entitled “Northern Sequence” in the 'Sunday Tribune' (1981) which features “Sands” is included. This collection of typescript notes and newspaper clippings also acted as a reference for Montague’s poetry regarding: the Kennedy assassination; the Northern Irish conflict; and notable figures, such as Seán Ó Riordáin and Cearbhall O’Dalaigh.
