Notes:The Society for Irish Church Missions to Roman Catholics was founded by the Reverend Alexander R.C. Dallas on 28th March 1849 as part of an intensive Evangelical campaign in Ireland. Their purpose was "The great work of the enlightenment of large bodies of Roman Catholics in Ireland, by the affectionate preaching of an outspoken Gospel in antagonism to Roman Dogma...". They were based principally in areas in the west of Ireland worst affected by the Famine of 1845-1849. The ICM converts, known as "soupers" or "jumpers", provoked great anger among the Catholics. The Irish Society entered into alliance with the ICM in 1853. The Irish Society had already been active in the west of Ireland, founding schools and winning converts. This alliance ended in 1856 because of the growing criticism of the ICM by the Church of Ireland. The ICM founded churches, parsonages, orphanages and also schools in the west of Ireland that provided education in English, Latin, Greek and Mathematics. The ICM wound up on the death of its founder Reverend Dallas in 1869.
