Kate Kelly was born in 1869. Her sister was Marion Bartels, whose son Wilfred Ewart Bartels, was involved with the Irish Volunteers under the alias Liam Kelly. Kelly corresponded with many notable Irish figures regarding Irish political prisoners. She corresponded mainly with Maud Griffith, the wife of Arthur Griffith. She visited Arthur Griffith in prison and sent parcels for him in Reading Gaol.
