Dorothy Stopford Price was born on 9 September 1890 in Roebuck, Dublin. She and her family moved to London following the death of her mother in 1902. She worked with the Charitable Organization Society in London and passed the entrance exam for Regent Street Polytechnic but she began her medical studies in Trinity College Dublin in 1916. After graduating in 1921 she began working in the Kilbrittain dispensary in County Cork and her republican outlook led to her appointment as medical officer to a Cork brigade of the IRA. She also lectured on first aid to Cumann na mBan members. After retiring from the dispensary in 1923, Stopford-Price worked mainly in St Ultan’s Hospital for Infants and the Royal City of Dublin Hospital. She began to research and write about tuberculosis, particularly in the context of children and after a visit to Vienna she began to use the tuberculin test to diagnose tuberculosis. She established her professional reputation through her research in Germany, Austria and Sweden into tuberculosis and BCG. She introduced BCG to St Ultan’s in 1937 and her work was recognized by Dr Noel Browne, minister for health, when the National BCG Centre was located at St Ultan’s in 1949. Stopford-Price was its first chairman. She published her book ‘Tuberculosis in Childhood’ in 1942 and she was nominated for the World Health Organization Leon Bernard prize for her contribution to social medicine. She suffered an attack of muscular rheumatism in 1939 and a stroke in the late 1940s. She died on 30 January 1954 as a result of a second stroke.
