The woman walking immediately in front of her, who cradles her small child strapped in a sling to her and another child on her back, steps on her foot while the soldier in the foreground carries a large drum strapped to his chest while his knapsack has a label on it that reads 'O La Buff'. The head of a duck (or goose) hangs in front of another bag attached to his waist, alongside an offset spiked socket bayonet. In front, a dog trotts through the river holding a small bundle in his mouth.
