In June 1969 a police raid on New York’s Stonewall Inn, a gay and transgender bar, ignited a gay uprising. Five days of rioting followed. The true cause of the unrest was not the raid, but years of police persecution and civil discrimination. Here, on the 25th anniversary of Stonewall, activists from ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) lead an unauthorised protest march on Fifth Avenue to highlight the AIDS crisis.
