Letter from May Kavanagh to her fiancé Éamonn Duggan, written during his detention in Lewes Prison,

1917 Feb. 07.

Kavanagh writes of the death of a mutual friend and her social activities in Dublin, her hopes that he will lose the weight he has put on in prison and her intention to learn Irish ‘to educate myself for Irish Circles’. She also refers to Duggan being visited by a ‘Mr. Cosgrove’ and her disappointment at Duggan’s not passing a message to her through Cosgrove, leading her to ask ‘will you ever be natural? Even your letters are as stiff as ice’. Duggan’s name and prison number are written in red pencil on the letter; she addresses her fiancé as Edmund.
