Muriel Gahan Papers,

1930-1994.

Papers of Muriel Gahan, reflecting her work as a promoter of traditional crafts in Ireland and role in the establishment of The Country Shop, Country Workers Ltd., the Irish Homespun Society and Country Markets Ltd. The collection also sheds light of her active involvement in further organisations such as the Royal Dublin Society, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, Foras Éireann, Macra na Tuaithe, the Crafts Council of Ireland and the credit union movement. Also included are papers of Blanaid O'Reilly, concerning the work of the Conor Magee Trust which provided financial support for weavers in the Donegal Gaeltacht and with whom Gahan collaborated as an I.H.S. member.

Description:Papers relating to specifications for homespun cloth. Included is an annotated typescript copy of the IIRS specification, with outlines requirements for the quality of wool, dyes, finishing and marking of homespuns. Attached is copy of observations made by Muriel Gahan of the Irish Homespun Society and with an attached and related letter from Gahan (recipient unclear) dated 25 May 1949.
Also included is documentation regarding the Irish Homespun Society's own specifications and a copy letter from N. A. Thompson, of the International Wool Secretariat to K. W. O'Hara of the IIRSS, concerning their work on producing a specification. Letter dated 30 June 1952.
