William O'Brien was interned by Britain at the time of the Stockport by-election due to his involvement in the War of Independence, but still ran in the by-election. Lynch writes ".....Kindell ....is prepared to lay odds to-day that the Workers Republican will poll at least 3,000 votes even if no canvasing were done for him.".
