Statement by Bulmer Hobson regarding Roger Casement's 'Black Diaries' with an explanation for their existence,
1933 February 1.
In this letter Bulmer Hobson suggests the diarys were transcripts made by Casement of a diary belonging to "one of the worst of the scoundrels engaged in ill treating the natives" in South America. This diary, according to Hobson, was sent to the English Foreign Office as evidence in an official investigation against the "recorded acts of sexual perversion", and in 1916, when English war propagandists sought to discredit Casement, they were falsely represented as Casement's own diaries.
