[Lieutenant Owen Wynne Gray]

Half length portrait of Lieutenant Owen Wynne Gray. He was the second son of Major Owen Wynne Gray of the 62nd Foot and Mary Andrews, and grandson of Owen Wynne Gray and Elizabeth Philpott of Roscommon. He was a relation of the Owen Wynne who built Hazelwood in Co. Sligo 1734 and cousin to Sir Edward Gray, Governor of New Zealand in the 1840s. Owen Wynne was born in 1817 in Travenor, India. He was sent to England to enlist as Ensign in the 39th Regt., and he was posted to India, where he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1840. In 1843, he was decorated for bravery. His Regiment was posted back to England in 1847, and the daguerreotype of him was probably made then. In autumn 1847, Owen Gray sailed from Galway to New Zealand with 79 Fencible recruits and their families. He returned from New Zealand in 1851 and married Jane Hayden in 1852. By 1859 Owen Gray was Captain in the 8th Regt. In August 1859, Owen Gray converted to Roman Catholicism, in Gibraltar. In 1862, Owen Gray set up as a gentleman farmer at Tybroughney Castle between Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, and Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.
