Letter from Charles Henry Locke, Lake Erie, Township of Colchester, Ontario, Canada, to his brother John Locke, Dublin, about his life in Canada,

1858 Nov. 15.

Writes about his lonely life in Canada: "So long a time has passed since I heard from home that it appears to me like death. I will first endeavour to describe to you the place I now write from. I am all alone in a shanty three miles from any clearance. The men go home on Saturday night and I being the only stranger am left to keep guard. We are chopping out roads through the Canada Company land. Close to us is another shanty of Niggers. We can neither eat nor sleep together. Our Shanty is composed of logs 35 feet long 12 feet wide enclosed on the three sides and chunked with moss. The front all open a large log heap in the front burns day and night. Plenty of beef, pork, bread, tea, molasses and butter cooked in a rough way. Our bed straws branches underneath. Each man supplied with two light rugs. I haven't slept in a bed or taken off my clothes to sleep for the last two months". Writes about how difficult it is to get work in the winter in Canada: "The winter has not yet set in. I dread it much. It is so difficult to get employment during that season, wherever I go in Winter I see lots of able bodied men glad to work for their board. This country was far better 12 years ago for the labouring class. Their farms were then new. Now they are cleared up and the farmers have nothing to do but feed their stock. During winter the lumber is mostly used up, through the country. Mowing and reaping machines do the work quick during harvest." Enquires after George Pierce "Let me know about George Pierce if he has come out or not. After so long an absence it would be a consolation to see one of my family".
