Maud Gonne MacBride papers,

1867-1983.

The papers of Maud Gonne MacBride (1866-1953), Irish activist, feminist and actress. Among these papers are Gonne MacBride's letters, including correspondence with her own family, Stephen Gwynn, Mary MacSwiney and W.B. Yeats. Also included is her correspondence concerning Inghinidhe na hÉireann, as well as her correspondence as a member of the Irish White Cross, the Women Prisoners Defence League and the Political Prisoners Committee. Gonne MacBride wrote extensively on political, economic, cultural and social issues, and many of her tracts and draft essays are included here. Also included are various autobiographical writings, many of these being drafts for her autobiography, 'A servant of the Queen', published in 1938. Her writings on the history of Inghinidhe na hÉireann and the treatment of prisoners, plus scripts for numerous radio talks given on Radio Éireann in the 1940s-1950s, are also collected here. Official documentation such as leaflets, reports and accounts for Inghinidhe na hÉireann and the Irish White Cross are collected here, as well as correspondence and documents concerning attacks by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kilrush, Co. Clare in 1932. Also included are photographs of Maud Gonne and her ephemera (including documents pertaining to her marriage, divorce and other legal papers), as well as items pertaining to her husband, John MacBride, and her children Iseult Gonne, Seán MacBride and George Silvére (who died in infancy).

She asks him to write her with his news, encourages him to "work hard" and asking if he has a "nice tutor". She asks him to pray that she is released and encourages him to keep up his religion.
