In Collection: Maud Gonne MacBride papers, 1867-1983.
Description:Typescript letter with autograph from Éamonn de Valera, marked personal and confidential, to Maud Gonne MacBride. It is a response to a letter she wrote to him in scathing criticism of government officials and policy, especially pertaining to their lack of support in the boycott of Bass' ale. De Valera responds to counter her allegations, stating "We have undertaken the responsibility of maintaining peace and order in the community... If we abdicate that responsibility... the result would be the complete frustration of all. It would indeed be something far worse than that - a civil war more calamitous than even the last".
