Notes:John Leo Burke was born on 15 January 1888 to William Burke, a merchant, and Anastasia Maher. He became a prominent Dublin solicitor and was a friend of Eamon De Valera. He was also a member of the board of governors of the National Gallery of Ireland. He was a friend of the artist Seán O'Sullivan and persuaded De Valera, Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh and others to sit for him. His interest and patronage of Irish art is evident in his correspondence with artists such as Evie hone, Albert Power, Oliver Sheppard, Patrick Hennessy and Jack B. Yeats. He was a regular at the Abbey and Gate theatres. His literary friends included Joseph Holloway, Lennox Robinson, Padraic Colum and T. C. Murray. Burke was an admirer of Oliver Sheppard's work and encouraged the government to have a bronze cast of Sheppard's sculpture 'The Death of Cuchulain' erected in the GPO as a 1916 memorial. He died on 10th November 1959.
