Frederick Shaw was the second son of Colonel Sir Robert Shaw of Bushy Park, Co. Dublin. Elected an Conservative M.P. for Dublin City in 1830-1831, he was subsequently elected M.P. for the University of Dublin [Trinity College Dublin], serving from 1832 to 1848; he seved in the judicial office of Recorder, [part-time municipal judge] of Dublin and Dundalk and was appointed a member of the Privy Council of Ireland on 15 January 1835. He resided at Kimmage Manor (now a college campus) until his death and is buried at St. Mary's [Anglican] Church, Crumlin Village.
