Earlier in the year the Countesses husband Count George Noble Plunkett had won a seat for Sinn Féin on 8 February 1917 in the North Roscommon by-election. [Count Plunkett ran against an Independent candidate Jasper Tully and T.J. Devine of the Irish Parliamentary Party; Plunkett received 3022 of the 5,403 votes cast (more than those of the other two candidates combined)].
