Summary: | Emily writes that she is due to sail in the sloop ‘The Bermuda’, which was sent over to Calais by Admiral Sir Thomas Foley [(1757-1833), husband of Emily's cousin Lady Lucy Fitzgerald, (1771-1851)]. Emily gives a description of Brussels and refers to paintings she has seen. She says Brussels ‘is so full of English [people] that it has all the worry of London on a smaller scale and is for idling, visiting and fidgeting just like a water drinking place…’. She says she enjoys travelling and refers to the attendant attentions she enjoyed, commenting on the men she encountered. She adds - ‘I do not think that any body who has not been abroad can have an idea of how very much English people depend upon each other for society or how very intimate they grow’. |
