Summary:Lady Louisa Conolly, writes from Castletown, Co. Kildare to her sister Lady Sarah Napier concerning misfortune in family of George Forbes, 6th Earl of Granard [his son, Capt. Hon. Hastings Brudenell Forbes, (1793-1815), was killed at the Battle of Waterloo] and that her satisfaction with the Battle of Waterloo [18 June 1815] is abated by the thought of ‘the load of sorrows that has fallen on so many unhappy families', although she hopes the victory will lead to peace. ‘But the French people are so odd, that there is no conjecturing what they will do.’ She writes of the loss of Major General Sir William Ponsonby, (1772-1815), and other family news.

Major General Ponsonby commanded the Union Cavalry Brigade at the Battle of Waterloo. He rode too far after their charge against Marshall Drouet D’Erlon’s I Corps and his horse became mired in mud near the enemy lines. He was killed by Polish lancers during a French counter-attack.
